Bono claims comedians could help win the fight against the Islamic State
U2 frontman suggests Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Sacha Baron Cohen could solve an international crisis.
It’s a new day, and Bono has another big idea.
The U2 frontman claimed - in front of a U.S. Senate subcommittee - that the fight against jihadism and the Islamic State could be aided by comedy.
As an alternative to airstrikes, Bono didn’t just claim the West needed to win hearts and minds - he suggested specific comedians to help win the fight with laughter. “Don’t laugh. I think comedy should be deployed. It’s like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them, when they’re goose-stepping down the street, and it takes away their power. So, I’m suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you,” he said, on 12th April.
“I’m actually serious,” he clarified, despite making jest of his final suggestions.
Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat for New Hampshire, responded by saying: “Actually, that’s not the first time I’ve heard experts on how do we counter violent extremism talk about that. It’s one of the things that we’re looking at.”
