British acts win big at the American Music Awards
One Direction and Sam Smith scoop up several gongs at fan-voted event.

One Direction emerged the big winners at the 2014 American Music Awards, the annual fan-voted end-of-year award ceremony, held in Los Angeles last night. The five-piece, who have taken the US by storm over the past twelve months, collected three awards, including Favourite Pop/Rock Album and Favourite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group before beating off competition from Eminem, Beyoncé and Katy Perry to win the ceremony’s top prize, Artist of the Year.
Sam Smith also cemented his popularity with American audiences by picking up the award for Favourite Pop/Rock Artist, singing his million-selling single ‘Stay With Me’ as a duet alongside A$AP Rocky.
Iggy Azalea also cleaned up, dominating the awards’ rap and hip-hop section by taking home the prizes for voters’ Favourite Album and Favourite Artist. After performing ‘Booty’ alongside Jennifer Lopez, the Australian rapper also invited Charli XCX onto the stage for a run-through of ‘Fancy’ before leaving the singer to work through a dream-like medley of her own songs, ‘Boom Clap’ and ‘Break The Rules.’
Opening the night with a crazy-eyed performance of new single ‘Blank Space’, Taylor Swift built on the platinum-selling success of ‘1989’ by collecting the ceremony’s first-ever Dick Clark Award of Excellence.
