Catholic Action find an unlikely muse in ‘Rita Ora’
Filling a song subject void we never knew existed (until today), the Glasgow band’s tribute to a pop star is today’s Neu Pick.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Catholic Action.
In the music world, every topic going is fair game for creative inspiration. Heartbreak, world peace and unrequited love all tend to be particularly popular subjects, but as of yet the universe has been lacking in one thing. Filling the void in life we never knew existed until this very moment, Catholic Action have penned a Glaswegian rock song about….erm, Rita Ora.
Some love ol’ Rita for her top class pop banger ‘Black Widow’. Others feel mildly irritated because her guest spot on Charli XCX’s ‘Doing It’ sort of ruined the song. But either way, she’s as good a muse as any, and you gotta admit, her name’s really fun to chant over peppy snare-claps and sparse, fuzzy bursts of guitar.
“Sometimes, for whatever reason, something just comes out of your mouth in a rehearsal room that for some strange reason, works perfectly with what you’re playing on your guitar,” the band’s Chris McCrory ponders, explaining the source of his inspiration to DIY. “Sometimes, it’s so fun to sing, it sticks. Sometimes, it happens to be a real person. And sometimes, that person inspires a lot of opinion.”
“Be-Bop-A-Lula, Rita Ora,” he added, for whatever reason.
Catholic Action hit the road next month for a UK tour - scroll down for all their upcoming dates, along with the first spin of their new song ‘Rita Ora’ below. Hit play, but beware of that killer chorus.
