Swedish singer Chez Ali shares the calming alt-pop of ‘Shake Shack’

The track - along with its new video - is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Chez Ali.

Today’s Neu Pick comes from Swedish singer Chez Ali, and his new video for single ‘Shake Shack’. A clip that sees him driving through Vaxholm, a series of islands in the vicinity of Stockholm, it complements the track perfectly.

‘Shake Shack’ is a woozy and brilliantly calming cut that recalls Unknown Mortal Orchestra in its slightly reserved swagger, ushering in spring from the clutches of winter.

Speaking about the video, the singer says: “Since this is my first music video, Matteus (video director: Matteus Kurpiel) thought it would be fitting to use Vaxholm as a background when introducing Chez Ali - as a nod to where I’m from. And to expand on that idea, I thought it would be fun to include my sister Wasima in the video because she’s been my ride or die since the start. The video is essentially a love letter/homage to my roots.”

“It’s actually my oldest sister that has influenced me the most,” he expands. “Ever since I can remember, there’s been a variety of hip hop and RnB blasting from her room, which I of course picked up. I’ve always been fascinated with the smoothness of RnB, which is something I strive for today.”
