Courtney Barnett teams up with Paul Kelly to cover Archie Roach’s ‘Charcoal Lane’

The two Melbourne musicians put together the reworking to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Roach’s debut album.

Courtney Barnett has teamed up with fellow Melbourne musician Paul Kelly to cover ‘Charcoal Lane’. The song is the title track of Archie Roach’s debut album; which turns 25 this year. Indigenous Australian Roach, is the first musician to receive a Human Rights Achievement Award as a direct result of a song, following the release of his emotive song ‘Took the Children Away’.

Paul Kelly co-produced ‘Charcoal Lane’ in 1990 with Steve Connolly. He and Courtney Barnett stick to the delicate framework of the original, weaving in unfussy harmonies along the way.

Courtney Barnett and Paul Kelly’s cover of ‘Charcoal Lane’ appears on a 25th Anniversary edition of Archie Roach’s debut, out on 6th November. The re-issue also comes along with other covers by Briggs, Gurrumul, Dewayne Everettsmith, Emma Donovan and Dan Sultan. Listen to Barnett and Kelly’s below.
