Glasgow’s The Arches staff post protest notes on final day

Staff members of Glasgow space The Arches - which was forced to close this week - have posted their own notes of protest, attached to the front door of the venue.

Stuck next to an official notice stating “The Arches is now Closed… Thank you everyone for your support” were hand-written notes, saying: “Close down corrupt Glasgow council & Police Scotland”, “Not The Arches!”, “Hands off Arts & Culture” and “#SaveTheArches”. See the notes below, as posted by Ross McCulloch.

Earlier this week, The Arches Board of Directors stated that following legal advice, their decision was made after realising the the venue was “left with no other choice” but to appoint administrators for both Arches Theatre and Arches Retail Company Limited.

Chairman Gordon Kennedy said: “The Board has taken professional advice and is left with no other choice than to begin the process of appointing administrators for both The Arches Theatre Ltd and Arches Retail Ltd. This decision has been taken with deep regret as it will have a major impact on our staff, business partners, customers, and on Glasgow’s reputation for night time economy.”

The announcement followed last month’s decision by the Glasgow Licensing Board to bring forward closing time to midnight. At the time, the venue confirmed that they would appeal against the decision, and a fan petition was launched to reinstate the club’s license, with over 40,000 people backing the #savethearches campaign across social media platforms.
