Neu Pick
Hare Squead deliver summer vibes on ‘Flowers’
The Irish hip hop trio supply another colourful slice of classic R&B as today’s Neu Pick.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Hare Squead.
Don’t let that black and white photo fool you: Irish hip hop trio Hare Squead’s world is a technicolour planet of vibrant beats, melodies and bars so fluid not even water could be more free-flowing. Following the release of their ‘Supernormal’ EP last year – which featured the buoyant single ‘Herside Story,’ a track that was re-purposes by rapper Goldlink on his debut album ‘At What Cost’ – they’re gearing up to release a brand new mini-collection, aptly titled ‘Season 2’, on 28th July.
After unveiling ‘Pure’ earlier in the year, which had a slightly downtempo yet classic R&B vibe (proving they can mine the depths of darkness just as well as they can light), they’ve now lifted the lid on ‘Flowers’. Built around a joyous, looping piano melody and a chopped and screwed vocal sample, Tony Konstone, Lilo Blues and Jessy Rose are on epic form, switching up the tempo of their flows at will, moving from fast-paced rhymes to deliberately curtailing their own lines to create staccato rhythms. While its foundation is relatively simple, the trio themselves bring added complexities that keep the track as fresh as a summer breeze.
Hare Squead have also announced a debut headline show in London! They’ll be playing at Birthdays in Dalston on 26th July, and tickets for the show are on sale now.
