Holy Motors are in the driving seat on ‘Valley’
The Estonians’ dusty, atmospheric slice from their upcoming debut is today’s Neu Pick.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Holy Motors.
Estonians Holy Motors – cowboys at heart who love shoegaze and feature no less than three guitarists in their five-piece line-up – are currently gearing up to release their debut album ‘Slow Sundown’ on 9th March through Wharf Cat Records. It’s been produced by Carson Cox of Merchandise and is set to comprise primarily of sad love songs that focus on the concept of motion, whether that’s universal in scale or forming part of existential isolation.
A few weeks ago they released ‘I Will Try’, a haunting number with a distinctively western feel and now, just a couple of weeks before the LP’s release, they’re sharing ‘Valley’. It’s a dusty, atmospheric cut that conjures images of small frontier towns, evoking images of loneliness. The Americana-tinged twang of the guitars are drenched in reverb, while vocalist Eliann Tulve sings each word with a husky world-weariness. The slight shifting of gears partway through the track continues to demonstrate that, like the free-wheeling 2012 film they share their name with, they’re not bound to any one particular style. Once again, they prove they’re firmly in the driving seat when it comes to smoky psychedelia.
