Irish producer REID streams ‘Fractures’ EP in full
Confident release features Fiona Burgess from Woman’s Hour.
This week sees the release of Irish producer REID’s second EP, ‘Fractures’. Instead of being a scattered bringing together of ideas from different homes, its title is a red herring: This is a confident, coherent release, one that goes on leaps and bounds from the youngster’s ‘Genesis’ debut.
Within the EP, he recruits the vocals of Fiona Burgess from Woman’s Hour and Karen Sheridan from Slow Skies. There’s no guarantee this’ll be his future route - bringing in guest vocalists to help ascend his starry-eyes instrumentals - but something clicks on ‘Fractures’. He’s clearly heading the right way, with serene but quick-pulsed productions sneaking into unlikely corners.
DIY’s got the first play of the EP in its entirety. It includes previously unheard tracks ‘Standing By’, the smoky ‘Scars’ (feat. Samuel Mason) and the Jon Hopkins-esque, gigantic closer ‘Geometry’, which stands out as the EP’s highlight.
“When I wrote my first EP I wasn’t really sure what I was doing, it was almost like I just threw a bunch of tracks together,” says the producer. “With the new EP I wanted to create something which made sense as a whole. I think that’s why it took me so long to put it together.
“I had never really worked with vocals before so it was great collaborating with Karen (Slow Skies), Fiona (Woman’s Hour) and Sam. They really took the tracks to another level when they stepped in. It was amazing to see how much a track can change when you have someone else put their touch on it.”
‘Fractures’ was almost a year in the making, he says, “but I think I managed to create exactly what I had set out to do when I started.”
