Neu Pick
Lully’s ‘Slow D’s’ takes the fast lane
New project comes shrouded in mystery, like 2010 never happened.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Lully.
There’s a serious dose of ‘blog-pop in its heydey’ about Lully’s debut track. There’s the jolting, Jai Paul-style production. Wobbling, pitch-shifting vocals are there too. Then there’s the lack of name, location or first name terms. Mystery’s in the air, and it’s a trick that worked for every sod under the sun in the early ‘00s, but not so much these days.
Thankfully, ‘Slow D’s’ isn’t just relying on old fads to get by. Far from it. Like hitting fast forward on pop, it constantly points forwards. Those pitchy vocals sound like chipmunks and sly burps at the same time, swinging from floor-filling, Mura Masa-style dance to glowed-up romance like it’s all just a game.
Hit play on Lully’s playful debut track below.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
