Neu Pick
Mutes fuel the fuzz with ‘Starvation Age’ video
Birmingham group’s outward-thinking debut EP is out now.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Mutes.
Earlier this year, Birmingham group Mutes put their first, fuzziest foot forward with ‘Starvation Age’. Intentionally rough around the edges, it still takes a fine band to stand out from behind a cloud of vibrant, clashing noise. That’s Mutes’ game, and it’s clearer than ever on the title-track from their latest EP.
Now ‘Starvation Age’ has a video to match. Again, it’s intentionally scrappy. It packs together gig footage with barely-visible shapes, combined like a madman losing their train of thought. But it’s a video that captures Mutes’ energy, which sits somewhere between the darkness of DIIV and early Deerhunter.
They remain criminally unsung, so grab Mutes’ latest EP on a ‘pay what you like’ basis here.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
