Nicholas Allbrook brings the glittery murk with ‘A Fool There Was’
Nodding to risqué silent movies, and delving into a swamp of reverb, we’ve got the first spin of the Perth musician’s latest.

It’s common knowledge by now; Nicholas Allbrook is a busy, busy bee. When he’s not frog-hopping across the stage flute-jamming as the frontman of Perth psych-heads Pond, he’s dipping in and out of all kinds of projects with his former Tame Impala bandmate Kevin Parker. As if that wasn’t enough to have on one plate, Allbrook’s also on his second full-length solo album, ‘Pure Gardiya’. That’s out later this month, on May 27th.
Compared with Allbrook’s other creative outlets, his latest project ventures into muddier, murkier territory. Just a hint of Pond’s space-coated stardust remains, and clean sounding riff howls are traded in for a more unforgiving swamp of discord.
With a title that seems to reference a rather ‘raunchy’ silent movie from 1915, his latest sneaky peek ‘A Fool There Was’ talks of being led awry and astray through burred, unclear lyrics. Allbrook’s fairly pissed off subject is stuck on a castaway ship, and just like the main character in the film of the same name, he’s really not keen on the destination.
“I don’t want to go to America!” yowls Allbrook at one point, letting rip the the sort of pained, dramatic scream that would make Tracey ‘Queen of Brats’ Beaker herself beam with pride.
We’re dead please to have the first spin of Nicholas Allbrook’s new song ‘A Fool There Was’. Listen to it below, and scroll down for the full deets when it comes to catching him live this summer.
