Quilt head home for new ‘Eliot St.’ video
The latest ‘Plaza’ cut comes ahead of a London show next week.
Boston bunch Quilt don’t like to linger on one thing for too long. Latest album ‘Plaza’ is evidence of the fact, darting between styles and sensations with a youthful, fresh-faced sense of wonder. For their new ‘Eliot St.’ video, though, they take things back to where it all began.
Roaming around those Boston city streets, the band indulge in all their favourite haunts, to a backdrop of one of ‘Plaza”s dreamiest cuts. It’s a blissful reminder of the joy of home comforts.
Get the first spin of Quilt’s new ‘Eliot St.’ video below. It comes ahead of a London show at Moth Club on November 15th - below the player, we had a quick catch up with the band ahead of that capital city return.
‘Plaza’ doesn’t hang about or dwell on one style for too long – is that a reflection of the way you guys write?
We write in a bunch of different ways. This album definitely branched out into ‘other styles’ a bit more. You can hear each of our own voices in there a little bit more on this record in terms of writing. Then there are a few on there that we happened to write more ‘all together’. It’s definitely song by song.
How’s the reaction to ‘Plaza’ been so far?
It’s been great. Been touring for the whole year pretty much. People keep coming. I think with any new record you’re going to have people who favour old stuff and people who favour the new stuff. This one has maybe been a bit more divisive because of it having a bit more of an eclectic swing. So, definitely different audiences taking to certain parts more than others. It’s been a wild dive into the world of human subjectivity, haha.
Talk us through the new video, too. It’s a chilled-out affair. Some lovely foliage.
Just wanted to do something simple. Have us all in a video together in the city we formed and that the song was initially written in. We didn’t really want to strong a ‘concept’ for this one. Just wanted to let the song speak for itself and show us all together being goofballs. We’ve been traveling like maniacs for the last few years - so it was good to touch back with Boston and dive into some of the emotions of that place.
And you’ve been trekking across Europe again! What’s been the best part about crossing the pond so far?
For me it was visiting ZDB in Lisbon, Portugal - such a great space and great people who work there; visiting Barcelona was incredible; and I had a really amazing conversation with a woman named Patty Conway on a rooftop in Madrid about how rock n’ roll has been ghetto-ized for years and needs to be liberated. When you tour in this specific circuit for long enough you start to realise how outdated so many of the current models are. Actually, I don’t know if they were ever in date… Haha. Anyway those were some highlights.
Moth Club in London is a bit… er… ‘kitsch’. Lots of glitter. What’s the most out there venue you’ve found yourselves in of late?
Well, we haven’t landed in any that have been crazy this time around, but I will talk a little bit about ZDB in Lisbon because I think it’s a pretty important example of a venue going in the right direction. They have been operating for close to 20 years in a beautiful historic area of the city. They have multiple art galleries upstairs, a residency program for musicians and artists, a full venue, a bookstore, and housing for artists who are playing there. Beyond that, they tend to book artists who aren’t totally run-of-the-mill, middle-music type shit. Really interesting invigorating artists, both visually and sonically. They book a lot of artists who aren’t getting exposure in other parts of Europe and also work with artists who maybe have more of a ‘name’. I think what they’re doing is really important and wish it was more common.
Over here we tend to call a quilt a ‘duvet’. Do you ever worry things might get lost in translation?
I more worry things will get lost under the sheets. The top is taken care of it seems.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
