Going it alone
Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien is working on a solo album
It’s going to be inspired by carnival music, apparently. Someone’s been to Notting Hill this summer, then.
Ed O’Brien, guitarist of plucky newcomers Radiohead, is working on a solo record.
In an interview with BBC 6 Music, Ed revealed that the material was recorded during a gap year of sorts in Brazil, and is such influenced by carnival music. “It was the greatest thing I’ve ever, ever, ever experienced in terms of music,” he said of the capital city of Rio’s Sambadrome processions. “Everyone sings. There must be 4,000 people in each samba school who parade down there, and the combination of writing music and that feeling of being there and being like, ‘Oh my god, music can be like this.’ It was so profound, so it’s fed my whole inspiration and writing. There’s an element of that joy of music, but - like a lot of Brazilian music - there’s a dark heart.”
It’s due for release following the mammoth world tour for Radiohead’s latest album ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’, apparently. Listen back to the interview here.
