Reading 2013: Deftones: “It’s A Celebration”

Rock veterans return for significant Reading & Leeds performances.

Deftones

mark their return to Reading & Leeds with a triumphant set in the former tonight. Ahead of System of a Down and Green Day on the main stage, this show holds particular importance.

It’s Deftones’ first UK show since the death of bassist Chi Cheng in April 2013. The band are treating it as a moment of significance: ‘It’s something that’s always in our minds, but we try to make it so that it’s more of a celebration of everything we’ve had, and to not let it weigh on us so much’, says Chino Moreno.

‘I mean, we get there and we play and it’s going through our minds through the show constantly. It’d be impossible for him not to’, he continues. Abe Cunningham backs up with the statement: ‘It’s a celebration. He’s got a very strong spirit too, and he’s definitely still here.’

On their return to Reading & Leeds, Chino remarks: ‘It’s one of the festivals that we’ve heard about all of our lives, and have always wanted to play it.’

Deftones play Reading Fest’s Main Stage, 5.55pm. Click here to read DIY’s Reading live blog.
