Rough Trade are having a 40th Birthday party at the Barbican

Protomartyr, John Grant, and Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor all play the anniversary bash.

Record shop and label institution Rough Trade turns 40 this year, and to celebrate their birthday, they’re putting on a big party at London’s Barbican on 22nd October.

Founded in 1976 by Geoff Travis, Rough Trade have put out records by The Smiths, The Raincoats, Warpaint, The Strokes, Laura Marling, Parquet Courts, and countless others over the years. The anniversary concert will showcase three new collaborations from some of the label’s earliest signings, along with “similarly adventurous musicians who’ve emerged in more recent years”.

For the Barbican event, The Pop Group will be collaborating with Protomartyr, and Scritti Politti - who signed to Rough Trade 40 years ago - are set to team up with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor. John Grant will also bring his new project Wrangler along for the party, which features Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire.

The event will also feature spoken-word, sessions, and pop-up performances as part of the Battle of Ideas festival earlier in the day.
