Sad13 amps up for ‘Hype’

The latest cut from ‘Slugger’ takes aim at the music industry’s treatment of women.

Speedy Ortiz vocalist Sadie Dupuis is hurtling towards her debut solo record ‘Slugger’ at breakneck speed, and with her latest cut ‘Hype,’ her bullshit-busting diatribe shows no sign of relenting. It follows on from previous glimpses ‘Devil in U,’ ’ and ‘Get a Yes’.

According to NPR, Dupuis originally wrote the song for Speedy Ortiz, but her band mates couldn’t bring themselves to commit for fear of shocking their mothers (presumably they were worried about that provocative chorus). Fair play to the Speedy clan for sheltering the ears of parents worldwide, but thankfully ‘Hype’ has seen the light of day; in a poppier Sad13 guise.

“She’s moody, dark, insane, but they still wanna lick my asshole,” drawls Sadie Dupuis sardonically, “they still wanna buy what I’m selling them.” It’s an all-out venomous attack on music’s dated obsession with so-called ‘manic pixie dream-girls’ - taking aim at the idea that it’s ok to put female musicians on a convenient, and very reductive, pedestal of mystery and allure. It’s a handy tool for enforcing the ridiculous notion that female musicians sell better without vocal opinions and voices. Here, opinions are at the centre.

Listen to ‘Hype’ below. ‘Slugger’ is out on 11th November.
