Under The Skin
Scarlett Johansson and Este Haim form The Singles, premiere single ‘Candy’
The single was produced and is being released by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek.
Actress and musician Scarlett Johansson has enlisted Este Haim, Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris and Julia Haltigan to be a part of a new “super-pop” group, The Singles.
In a press release from Johansson, who last released music in 2009 with a 1960s-inspired duets album alongside Pete Yorn, the Avengers and Lost In Translation star stated her desire to create music inspired, she says, by Grimes, The Bangles and The Go-Gos.
“The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls, I wanted it to be like those bands. Ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”
The first track to be heard from The Singles comes in the form of ‘Candy’, produced by TV on The Radio’s Dave Sitek. The producer will also release the single on his own label, Federal Prism.
‘Candy’ marks a dramatic change in approach from Johansson, the quirky folk of her 2008 album ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’ replaced with synth-charged pop, Sitek leaving his mark with disorientating guitar lines that clash with unwavering, almost punishing synth. Johansson appears sugary sweet all on purpose, “I don’t know about no fast cars, only sweet things and candy bars / You make my mouth water, yum yum pop, give me them lips I can’t be stopped.”
