South London’s Peeping Drexels pen a grotty ode to ‘Toast of London’ on ‘Ray Purchase’
Muses truly do come from all directions.
When you think of the concept of a muse, you normally envision a mysterious, magical human, one imbued with a certain je ne sais quoi whose innate allure and magnetism sparks a creative fire from deep within the soul.
Ray Purchase - the white turtleneck-wearing, moustachioed love rival in Matt Berry’s cult TV show ‘Toast of London’ - is not that person. And yet here, South London newcomers Peeping Drexels have penned a winning ode to the fictional man that could rival the most adoring of love notes.
“Ray Purchase’s scheming ways are an inspiration to everyone in the band,” notes singer Dylan Coates.
Over the kind of grotty hoe-down that brings to mind a more perky Fat White Family, the sadly defunct Amazing Snakeheads or - more recently - fellow n’ere-do-wells LICE, the quintet create the kind of grubby, back-alley boogie that the man himself wouldn’t be seen dead getting his sparkling whites anywhere near.
That’s a sentiment clearly not shared by indie faves Fierce Panda, however, who’ve picked the track up for a single release.

Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
