Swim Deep go ‘90s game-show with ‘Namaste’
New album ‘Mothers’ is out this autumn via Chess Club / RCA.
Think Swim Deep have gone headfirst into a bonkers new direction? New song ‘Namaste’ confirms it.
The track’s just been played as a Hottest Record on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show, and it sounds like a cross between a ‘Numberwang’-style ‘90s game-show and a maraca-shaking post-Hacienda Bez apocalypse. Austin Williams shrieks for a solid two seconds. There’s showy synth parts and sky-reaching solos. It’s undoubtedly the strangest, most exciting thing to emerged from second album ‘Mothers’ so far.
Speaking about the track, Williams says: “The title comes from Ancient India. It’s a farewell - a reverential salutation. This is a mark of what’s to come. It’s a different album, and we’ve all progressed a lot. It’s a very immediate album, more a reaction to the realities that we’re in, rather than being a bit hazy about it.”
With the new LP out this Autumn via RCA / Chess Club, the band are promising everything on the follow-up to ‘Where the Heaven Are We’. In a new in-the-studio interview, they tell us to expect: “Pop singles, spacey Pink Floyd shit, big climaxes, singalong round the fire songs.”
It’s hard to say where exactly ‘Namaste’ slots into that equation, but it’s undoubtedly the sound of a band giving zero-shits and racing ahead with new ideas. Listen below.
