Sylas arrive with Brian Eno-approved first track, ‘Hollow’

Mysterious production duo get daring on their curious first take.

Sylas is a new London via Frankfurt production duo stepping straight out of the shadows (well, they remain anonymous for the time being, but forget that) with their luscious debut ‘Hollow’.

Released with the approval of Brian Eno (the legendary producer met Sylas at a local singing group), their first work dives straight into the dark, bubbling up quality permanently etched into Darkside’s ‘Psychic’. And the melting, choral quality of ‘Hollow’’s vocals could be lifted straight from James Blake’s hard drive of vocal loops. Undeniably of its time, it’s also daring, curious in the way it opens with a solemn chug, like the sound of wheels gradually picking up speed by turning in motion.

“Once I give into this apathy / the vultures will wait on me,” runs the opening line, and there’s every reason to believe Sylas is a project that exists to get ahead of itself. If ideas run dry, that’s when the grim reaper knocks. Bleak, but brilliantly inventive, this is a marvelling introduction.

It’s taken from a forthcoming EP on Aesop (SOHN, Tala), so keep an eye out.
