Tangerines announce debut album with the gritty ‘Peckham Boys’

‘Into The Flophouse’ is set for release on May 12th

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Tangerines.

South London’s Tangerines are clearly indebted to the place they call home: they’ve opened their debut album with an ode to it, after all. But you’d be hard pressed to audibly find the grit and grind of Peckham and its surrounds in anywhere bar ‘Peckham Boys” title.

Meeting at the junction between The Growlers’ lo-fi jangles, Kevin Morby’s giddiest kicks and a host of America’s more wild-eyed musical pioneers (see: The Modern Lovers, Television), ‘Peckham Boys’ is pleasingly misleading in the same way that an Azealia Banks track entitled ‘Dainty Wallflower’ might lead you up the garden path.

At a time when South London’s key proponents are revelling in glorious grot (see: Shame, Dead Pretties, Goat Girl et al), Tangerines’ sun-bleached surf rock is a refreshingly upbeat proposition.

‘Into The Flophouse’ lands May 12th via RIP Records and they’ll also be heading out on a mini headline jaunt this March.
