Mercury Prize 2016
The Comet Is Coming are “trying to find a new planet” at the Mercury Prize, apparently
This year’s obligatory “never heard of this lot” nominees had a quick natter on their way into the prize.
It’s a bit of a Mercury Prize tradition - every year there’s a shortlister that not many people have really heard of. Following in the footsteps of GoGo Penguin, and Polar Bear, it’s an honour snapped up in 2016 by jazz-funk heads The Comet is Coming, nominated for their record ‘Channel The Spirits’.
Speaking on the way into the ceremony, the band painted a brief picture of what on earth to expect from one of their live shows, and indeed their Mercury performance later tonight. “There’s three guys, just going as hard as possible,” they said. “Bear Grylls on stage.”
Apparently a Mercury Prize nomination has never been on their list of expectations. Instead, The Comet Is Coming have been “imagining a lot of spacious travel, away from the public, trying to find a new planet, and different alien cultures.”
Before departing into the evening like shooting stars fading away into the night, The Comet is Coming also disclosed what they’d spend the winner’s dosh on. Apparently they fancy “[going] to the jungle, and then have some experiences that would lead to the creation of some new music.
Fair enough. Listen to their best known banger ‘Space Carnival’ below.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
