The Harpoons stream debut LP ‘Falling For You’ in full
Oddball, curious pop has a new flag bearer in the shape of this Aussie group.
The staples of Melbourne four-piece The Harpoons’ dagger-sharp, daring pop are familiar. There’s a groove-led R&B routine, and Bec Rigby’s vocals are reminiscent of a nagging thought that lodges itself in the conscience. Still, debut LP ‘Falling For You’ is all about shunning familiarity, or at least using present day comforts for a new purpose.
Out 26th September in Australia via Remote Control Records and Two Bright Lakes, this debut checks in with the likes of Chairlift and Little Dragon in using pop as a distinctly malleable form. Slight synth shifts and unpredictable drum patterns aren’t enough - the whole book needs to be flipped.
Running from the instant crush of ‘Unforgettable’ to the slicker, candlelit title-track, it’s a record that never bites off more than it can chew - minimalism is the thread that holds these crazy ideas together.
DIY’s delighted to have the premiere for ‘Falling For You’ below. Listen below.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
