The Thermals Announce New Album, ‘Desperate Ground’
The record sees them working with new label, Saddle Creek.
The Thermals have announced they’ll be releasing a sixth album this spring.
The Portland trio, last seen back in 2010 with ‘Personal Life’, will issue the record, called ‘Desperate Ground’, on 16th April (Stateside, anyway) via their new home, label Saddle Creek.
The ten-track album was recorded in Hoboken, NJ with producer John Agnello - previously known for work with Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth. It was completed, we’re told, just hours before Hurricane Sandy hit the state.
The band posted a message on their website announcing the record, explaining ‘Saddle Creek and The Thermals have been bros for years’.
It reads: ‘The Thermals have a new record! The title is Desperate Ground. It was produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth.) It’s a loud, fast and joyously violent thrill ride. The Thermals are proud to announce this amazing new LP will be released April 16th, 2013 by the fabulous Saddle Creek record label. Saddle Creek and The Thermals have been bros for years, and their new partnership is quite fitting. The Thermals have toured with Cursive, Hutch and Kathy put on the very first Bright Eyes show in Portland, and The Faint used to crash on Hutch’s floor.’
The Thermals have a series of live dates lined up to promote the record ahead of release, including appearances at this year’s SXSW.
They are:

1 San Francisco, CA Noise Pop at Rickshaw Stop
2 Cupertino, CA Homstead Lanes Bowling Alley
7 Brooklyn, NY 285 Kent Ave
8 Clinton, NY Beinekie Events Barn at Hamilton College
9 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell’s

Such vibrant narratives are sorely needed as ‘Desperate Ground’ lacks dynamic and variation elsewhere.
