Mercury Prize 2015
Wolf Alice on their Mercury Prize plans: “I’ll probably just wet myself”
We had a quick catch up with Ellie Rowsell post-Mercury nom.
As the Mercury Prize creeps ever-closer (here’s those nominations, fyi), we figured it was time for a quick catch up with a few of the nominees, in order to capture their crazed, excited, possibly drunken haze of emotions in the wake of the announcement last week.
First up, we had a little chat with Ellie from Wolf Alice on their reactions, plans and predictions for the prestigious gong. In case you weren’t aware, we sort of like Wolf Alice - here’s our five-star review for that rightfully-Mercury-nominated debut album ‘My Love Is Cool’, and here’s our recent cover feature detailing just why we reckon they’re the most important band in a generation.
The Mercury Prize winner will be announced on the 20th November at a fancy shindig in London, or via your telly-box on the BBC. Let us know who you think deserves the gong via Twitter or Facebook.
How does it feel to be nominated for the Mercury Prize?
It’s a massive compliment and we are feeling very flattered!
Where were you when you found out?
We were in San Francisco and had just played one of our favourite shows of all time. Emotions were very high as it was the last show of our run with Drenge and Made Violent, so it was the cherry on the cake so to speak.
Any big plans for the ceremony? Any Kanye-style mic grabs? Maybe don’t wear a cape…
Who knows how we will deal with that level of excitement so yeah, maybe. Doubt it will be any mic grabs or cape wearing, probably just wet myself or something less rock n roll.
Who (apart from yourself, no cheating) do you think deserves the award and why?
I don’t know who deserves it, I like the Jamie xx record the most at the moment but that could change.
If you DID win, what would you do with the twenty grand?
I’d like to give it to Theo and tell him he has 24 hours to spend every last penny, then follow him round with a go pro and submit the footage to whatever the Mercury equivalent is in the film industry.
The awards were announced 2:30am U.S. time on the last night of your American tour … just how drunk were you when you had to phone into 6Music?
I’d had a few but I was elated regardless so was always gonna feel and probably sound giddy.
How glad are you to not have Drenge following you around everywhere anymore?
Devastated to be honest, they’re absolute diamonds and have made one of, if not my fave record this year.
