Years & Years score Number One with ‘King’

Years & Years’ ‘King’ has entered the UK Singles Chart at Number One.

The former DIY cover stars toppled Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’ from top spot, where it had spent the previous four weeks, by shifting over 100,000 copies of the track.

Speaking to the UK Official Charts Company, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander said “I don’t think any of us thought we’d be Number 1. No one told us it would be Number 1. They said it wouldn’t get to Number 1, but it did!”

Elsewhere in the singles chart, Rihanna, Kanye and Paul are up to Number Three, Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’ is at 4, and The Weeknd’s ‘Earned It’ is at 5.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are Number One on the album chart, their ‘Chasing Yesterday’ the year’s fastest-seller, with 89,000 copies sold in its first week.

Royal Blood’s self-titled debut is at 5, while usual suspects Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and George Ezra make up the rest of the Top Five.

(Oh, and it looks like they’ve self-confirmed for Glastonbury too, in their Radio 1 ‘look we’re Number One’ interview, listen here from about 2m50 in)
