Eliza Doolittle - Eliza Doolittle

The lazy and obvious Lily Allen comparisons are inevitable really, but fortunately what Eliza Doolittle lacks in lyrical wit and brashness, she makes up in a variety of hummable tunes. Unlike her pop peer, Eliza is a musical chameleon, delivering songs from mixture of 60s tinged pop, jazz and folk. Single ‘Skinny Genes’ reveals her true pop nature and is as good as anything currently in the top 40. Other tracks, such as ‘Moneybox’ and ‘Rollerblades’, are equally excellent. Sadly, these stand out tracks are juxtaposed with that nagging knowing that they are just quirky and left-field enough to be exploited in a mobile phone advert.

Eliza has crafted some good summery pop here, it’s a pleasant listen and will no doubt be accompanying garden parties and barbeques come July, but despite these pleasantries it does feel a bit confused; at times the poor girl sounds like she would rather be producing something more significant. Maybe in time those jazz and folk influences might step out from the shadows and reveal her true colours. As it stands, perhaps Eliza’s debut is too throwaway for some. It’s hardly going to set the charts ablaze, unless of course, the ad men get their filthy hands on it.
