Lupen Crook - Waiting For The Post-Man

Most artists would baulk at the notion of releasing more than one album in a year, but then Lupen Crook is no ordinary artist. His last album, the excellent ‘Pro’s & Con’s Of Eating Out’ was released just nine months ago. ‘Waiting For The Post-Man’, written, performed and produced by Crook, is a departure from the rock style that defined his last output.

Where ‘Pro’s & Cons’ of eating out was like a soundtrack to an intoxicated, hedonistic period this is very much the deep, inner regret the morning after. Themed around loss and consequence, it has clearly provided catharsis for Crook, and is reflective, contemplative and sobering as a result.

Musically and vocally, ‘Waiting For The Post-Man’ is more restrained and mature. There is a distinct vulnerability in the delivery of the vocals, croaks and fragility in-between words and lines. Where his last record spat lyrics in your face, this is a whisper in your ear. As a result, it isn’t as instant as his other work, however, this less belligerent approach is equally rewarding in the long term. Although thematically and musically different to its predecessor, it is still work of considerable quality.

Overall, a testament to Crook’s escalating talent, perhaps more bands should adopt a similar work ethic.
