Magik Markers - Balf Quarry

Indeed by supporting Sonic Youth on their American Tour in 2004, Magik Markers in many ways condemned themselves to forever being associated with the pivotal noise rock kings. However, as justified and supported as the association is, Magik Markers need a little more credit for their troubles.

“Magik Markers, eh? What are they like?” “Oh, well kinda like Sonic Youth, so if you like Sonic Youth, you’ll like Magik Markers…”

Indeed by supporting Sonic Youth on their American Tour in 2004, Magik Markers, duo Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan, in many ways condemned themselves to forever being associated with the pivotal noise rock kings. However, as justified and supported as the association is, Magik Markers need a little more credit for their troubles. Formed in 2001, the band have an impressive back-catalogue of CD-Rs, as well as albums on various labels, proving them to be quite the productive types.

‘Balf Quarry’ comes at a good time. With bands like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth re-touring, the good ol’ sound is back in trend, and those that missed it fully the first time around are given the chance to make it their own. Sure, they’re gonna listen to the elders, but with Magik Markers, maybe there’s something new to be had…

Ambrogio’s voice is perfect. Tired, exhausted even, she harmonies effortlessly, sounding ever feminine; refreshing really. Whether she be verging more towards shouting, on tracks such as ‘Jerks’ and ‘The Lighter Side Of…Hippies’, or leaning on a very good, tuneful voice, it is evident that Magik Markers have got the talent. The instrumentation varies immensely from track to track, with the melodious wall of sound holding throughout. Often surprising to think it’s all one record. Ten songs, ten obviously worked, analysed and mastered songs. Nothing brings it down. They’ve made sure all exits are secured.

Two and a half minute opener ‘Risperdal’, as wonderfully punk rock as it is, seems a million miles away from the closing ten minute epic ‘Shells’. So sure, Magik Markers can be filed alongside Sonic Youth cos the sounds they’re making are of a same genre, but give the guys some credit: ‘Balf Quarry’ is a pivotal record in its own right, even though it may only be turning two people’s worlds upside down.
