What would you get if you threw the Modern Lovers into San Francisco in the 21st century? Nodzzz is what you’d get. We know it’s somewhat cliché comparing them to Richman’s motley crew, but they really are the best and pretty much only comparison worth making. ‘Cos Nodzzz aren’t doing what all the other kids are. Except for maybe having a good time.
Their self-titled debut is, in essence, a true punk record. Compiled of ten songs totalling at a running time of 16 minutes, the record whizzes past in a haze of jangly sounds and intelligent lyrics. The topics span from karaoke to road trips, all the while communicating an underlying boredom. Observationalism is a la carte today: “In the city there’s something to prove / But no where to move”, they offer lazy observation but no solution. Stateside sunshine beating down on pro-activity, yeah?
‘Highway Memorial Shrine’ is an early highlight; cheap and cheerful, rolling music, driving music. Self-sufficient and satisfied. ‘(I Have) Bad News’ is equally fun, with short sparky rhythm and rhyme. The entire record is the perfect summer wind-down. Picture slow sunsets, seemingly eternal warmth and comfort- putting off the knowledge that it’ll soon come to a bitter end of introversion and anger. But in owning this record, it’ll all drag on a little while longer.
