spill tab - ANGIE
4 StarsWhat are on paper strange qualities also make for some of the project’s most inviting moments.
Fans of electro pop connoisseurs Metronomy may recognise the wispy vocal of spill tab from her inclusion on their 2021 release, ‘Posse EP Volume 1’. Take a deeper dive into the LA-based French-Korean musician’s back catalogue, and you’re introduced to the boundless, bilingual creative, hurdling over genre expectations and combining English and French lyrics in a sultry manner. Being a debut album, it’s no surprise that spill tab - real name Claire Chicha - has spent three years honing the sound of ‘ANGIE’, cherry picking her favourite tracks from that time. Working alongside her close-knit community of collaborators, what she’s landed on here is a combination of her boldest work yet. Utilising vintage synthesizers, analogue sounds and earned production experience, ‘Adore Me’ is a beautiful slow dive into a post-relationship reconfiguration, while ‘Hold Me’ is a sensual, syncopated bossa nova number. Elsewhere, ‘Angie’ and ‘Pink Lemonade’ feel like bolsters of the album; the build of the title track is a breathtaking ascent, combining anthemic vocal stacks and squealing guitar hero style guitars, before ‘Pink Lemonade’ leans into some of the most jarring production moments on record. ‘By Design’ similarly flirts with tension, but the inclusion of what are on paper strange qualities - pitched-up vocals and glitchy lead lines - also make for some of the project’s most inviting moments.
