The most annoying thing about Tunng is that whenever you set about describing how fabulous and understatedly brilliant they are people always stop you after the first sentence. “Who?” they say when they hear the name of the band – “Tongue?” No, you can’t help but roll your eyes. “Tunng” you reply. They nod and smile in that way that suggests we’re talking utter rubbish.
Which we can assure you we aren’t. Because Tunng – as this Live from the BBC recording testifies – are as far from rubbish as you can get. They are just gorgeous – well their music is anyway. And so it should be because Mike Lindsay and his band have been supplying musical offerings for seven years now.
‘This Is Tunng Live From The BBC’ is intimate, magical and the perfect antidote to any frenetic Christmas activities you might be enduring. Listen to the album on headphones, close your eyes and leave all the festive waffle behind. And if something in that deep stone cold heart of yours doesn’t stir at the sound of Jenny Again you need medical attention.
And even amidst the dark dark days of winter Hustle can’t fail to conjure up the warm glow of a summer day, and finger picking fans will be delighted when the uplifting melody of ‘With Whiskey’ floats lightly through the speakers.
‘This Is Tunng Live From The BBC’ is one of those rare pieces of music that make you so happy you can’t help but cry, and so special you’ll want to keep a secret (if only to avoid having to repeat the name of the band over and over again).
