Biffy Clyro - Black Chandelier
The fallacy reads there are two Biffy Clyros.
‘Simon had a night of pure fucking genius when he wrote it.’
That’s what Biffy Clyro told us about their new single ‘Black Chandelier’ when we sat them down for a catch up last week. Lately Simon has been having more than his share of nights of pure fucking genius - enough to fill a double album with, no less. Good job too; stadium sets tend to go on a bit.
Because that’s where the three-piece are heading. They’ve paid their dues, worked themselves up the bills, earning their ubiquitous airplay with a strand of rock that’s far easier to get on board with than Muse’s occasionally ludicrous theatrics. Here they’re in fine form, mixing their anthemic strand with a mid section that physically crunches the rib cage. Building from sparkling verse to rousing chorus, the Biff’ have long past become masters of the art - you’ll be singing it back to them at more than one festival this summer.
The fallacy reads there are two Biffy Clyros. There’s the cult band of yore - the one everyone will tell you they love, and the modern day chart-bothering monster. Truth be told, though, there was never a great watershed - more an evolution. More comfortable in their skin, when they need to bring out the heavy weaponry they’re more than capable of going toe to toe with anyone; but what’s the problem with a good hook? This is the butterfly Biffy always promised to be: watch them soar.
‘Black Chandelier’ is released on 14th January 2012, and is taken from the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Opposites’.
