Blossom Caldarone - Might Smash A Window

Following last year’s single ‘Waxing Lyrical’ and fresh from a world tour with English Teacher, the release of Blossom Calderone’s next solo effort has been highly anticipated. With ‘Might Smash A Window’, she delivers a collection of tracks which subtly refine and polish her sound all while holding onto her distinct, confessional style.

Still drawing from her classical background, this EP feels more authentic and assured. There are flashes of early-‘00s British pop too, particularly in her sharp lyricism and melodic phrasing, recalling the likes of like Lily Allen without ever feeling pastiche. Each track has a natural warmth in both production and storytelling with flowing arrangements that intentionally unfold around Blossom’s voice and capitalise on her multi-instrumentalist talent. ‘Secret’ best demonstrates this, a beautiful, piano-led track, framed by a lilting orchestral opening and a gentle stripped back coda, drawing the song to a hushed, introspective close.

Lyrically, ‘Might Smash A Window’ sees a subtle but marked shift. Where previous work leaned on first-hand interpretations, her writing now seems to take on a more narrative style. “I know her face… it was mine when I met you” distills ‘Wreck’’s self-critical reflection on a tumultuous time, reframing feelings that once felt directed at her now realised as the “epitome of projection”. Here, Blossom delivers a record that feels more cohesive and intentional, a strong step forward that perfectly showcases her growth as a songwriter and musician.
