London-based singer / songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has been reaping praise from the likes of Lauren Laverne and Adele, but don’t let that put you off. ‘I’m Getting Ready’ is his second EP, showcasing his remarkably empathetic vocals and stripped down guitar work, reminiscent of Nick Drake minus the spider fingered intricacy.
The title track is the most impressive cut on this three-track offering, the simple lyrics and delivery are complimented by the sympathetic production, gentle brushes of the snare and a gradual build up of soulful harmonies. Therein lies the key - Kiwanuka is certainly operating within the realm of soul but it’s the skeletal, unadorned approach that suits him best. The remaining two tracks, ‘I Need You By My Side’ and ‘Any Day Will Do Fine’ are, as the song titles suggest, more pedestrian and sound more cluttered than the superior title track which gives Kiwanuka’s soothing vocals ample opportunity to breathe.
Kiwanuka’s delivery recalls a more languid Al Green and while this EP certainly doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking, there is a balmy, cheery charm to his retro-soul vibes which suggests something more substantial on the horizon.
