Sir Yes Sir - Not Excited

Providing you’ve got a cassette player that still functions you’ll really want to get this EP.

Having been invited out on tours with Johnny Foreigner and playing shows with Dutch Uncles we can’t be alone in thinking that Sir Yes Sir might just have something about them, before we’ve even heard a note. Their debut cassette (cassette!) headed by the great ‘Not Excited’ thankfully lets us know that it is indeed the case that the band have at the very least, something.

If you remember how The Cribs sounded in their early days (a long time before they wheeled in an ex-Smith) then you might be able to get an inkling as to where Sir Yes Sir are coming from. The guitars are all nice and fuzzed up whilst the vocals are mumbled over the top as though delivered by a slacker Mark E Smith. And whilst, this specifically relates to the title track, it does broadly service the whole EP.

See, although Sir Yes Sir are pretty ace at what they do, we would be lying if we said that they exhibited an awful lot of variety. It doesn’t matter though, this is a classic formula and one that works. Proper ’90s indie rock when pulled off right is a joy, and this band not only pull it off perfectly but they also write cracking songs too.

‘Horse Walking’, which features on the B side of the cassette release is as good a guitar song as you’re likely to hear in the next twelve months, whilst ‘Hit 3’ is grungy enough to give Dinosaur Pile-Up a run for their money. Providing you’ve got a cassette player that still functions you’ll really want to get this EP.
