Westside Cowboy - This Better Be Something Great

A compelling introduction.

Westside Cowboy - This Better Be Something Great

Westside Cowboy kick things off with a defiant eponymous yell on their mission statement mouthful ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone I Thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)’. The Manchester-based quartet, who met and formed at university, embrace slacker rock and transatlantic influences across this debut EP, all while creating something that feels wholly themselves. The turbulent ‘Alright Alright Alright’ is a frenzied punk track that showcases the band’s versatility both sonically and lyrically, written as it is from the perspective of their horse-riding namesake. ‘Drunk Surfer’, meanwhile, is underlined by crunching guitar lines and bears resemblance to some of Black Country, New Road’s output - perhaps due to its unpredictable melodies and the harmonising between Reuben Haycocks and Aoife Anson O’Connell.

By contrast, ‘Shells’ is a much gentler number, with its softly-strummed guitars and airy vocal delivery offering a moment of respite from the EP’s energised earlier tracks (until, that is, it metamorphoses into a folk-tinged number with a grandiose guitar outro). The plodding closer ‘Slowly I’m Sure’ finds Westside Cowboy melancholy and romantic, as Aoife’s falsetto melds gorgeously with Reuben’s voice in its final moments - a subtle yet cinematic end to this compelling introduction.
