Justice - Civilization

Justice have stepped up to the plate.

Justice are a group who need no introduction, but just in case you were in a hole from 2007-9 here’s a recap. Formed by Frenchmen Gaspard Augé and Xavier De Rosnay, Justice are known for their trademark electro-house sound, sparking its late noughties revival fronted by their home-label Ed Banger. Previous singles ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ and ‘Phantom Pt.II’ lit up dancefloors in indie discos and Ibiza mega-clubs alike, catapulting them into the electro-stratosphere. Their debut full length LP ‘†’ showed their sound could range from harpsichord laden opuses to abrasive disco, and subsequent live shows were attended by both the casual clubbers and the South London ket heads, none of whom left disappointed. Live Album ‘A Cross the Universe’ brought their euphoric live show to the average Joe’s living room and after that… Silence. Apart from the very rare performance or DJ set across the pond Justice disappeared off the face of planet, leaving a crucifix-shaped hole in all of our hearts. Rumours emerged of an album in early 2010 to no avail, but finally in April 2011 a teaser emerged for their new single - ‘Civilization’.

Featuring Ali Love on vocals ‘Civilization’ is basically Justice accepting the crown of arena-dance kings, with former champions Daft Punk not having made a proper album for six years. Speaking of the Daft Punk, Justice have always been compared to the space-age motorcyclists and this single in unashamedly Daft Punk-esque, with elastic disco bass lines and static-ridden drums. The real question is have they really done themselves Justice? (Sorry I couldn’t resist) Yes, is the simple answer. Justice have stepped up to the plate and look completely set on becoming electro rock-stars, ready to conquer the mega-clubs of Ibiza, the arenas of the UK and the stadiums of the US. The only thing remaining is for them to find some shiny new costumes, may I suggest leather?
