Live Review

Ratatat, O2 Sheffield Academy

Who would’ve thought instrumentals could be this much fun?

For those who’ve not seen a Ratatat show, the best way to describe it is as an ‘experience’ and a very live one at that.

The boys demonstrate their 90:10 live quota by rocking their instruments to the hilt against a backdrop of bizarre visual imagery from their videos - distorted ABBA heads on the ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’-esque ‘Shempi’, a montage of Americans advertising their best false smiles in ‘Drugs’, and Fellini the Parakeet is projected in all her glory on new single ‘Neckbrace’.

Shroud is the epitome of ‘Guitar Hero’ when he leans back and really gets into his own sound and Mast does a fantastic job of instrument hopping. Both beat the shit out of the drums like tribal men and both certainly have great stage presence.

With two glass screens on either side of them, plus another giant screen behind, this is the most spectacular support band show a band like Vampire Weekend could hope for. In fact, it takes twenty minutes just to clear the stage of all the various instruments, equipment and pieces of glass.

Ratatat are a split personality version of Lady Gaga - on a much smaller budget - but with more clothes on and more musical style (and no question of a penis). Who would’ve thought instrumentals could be this much fun?
