Gurriers, Courting & more cap off rowdy Saturday night for SON Estrella Galicia’s Soundhood Hackney micro-festival
27th September 2025
The second edition of their micro-festival sees three Hackney venues taken over for a night of delicious beers, loud music and messy mosh pits.
It may may be hard to believe, but it’s now been almost three years since SON Estrella Galicia first landed in the UK for their intimate series of East London gigs that puts championing new talent at its heart. The series has gone from strength to strength in that time, though - hosting the likes of Jessica Winter, Big Special, Man/Woman/Chainsaw and many more along the way - with the latest event arriving as the second edition of their Soundhood Hackney micro-festival, which sees three venues across the area taken over for a night of delicious beers, loud music and messy mosh pits.
Heading downstairs into the belly of The Sebright Arms is a swift reminder that while there may be a chill in the air outside, that’s not a worry down here, as Madrid’s own Yawners take to the stage (after the special beer experience dubbed Beer Backstage gets underway in the pub above us). Packed with zippy energy and a knack for grungy, but pop-flecked melodies, it’s little surprise that one of their songs is named after Weezer’s frontman, ‘Rivers Cuomo’, such is their catchy, punky tenacity. In a complete change of tone, Folly Group’s wares are somehow both mesmerising and jarring (in a good way), as their effortless blending of distinct styles - think a dose of post-punk, a little trip-hop, even a dash of improvisational jazz, for good measure - helps create a truly engrossing performance.
Heading up Mare Street to reach the top end of Hackney, there’s yet more action going on at Paper Dress Vintage, which tonight - along with a particularly humourous round of Beer & Beats musical bingo - boasts a giddy set from firecracker outfit Amor Liquido (whose Spanish language cover of Jet’s ‘…Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ bursts into life in the midst of the tiny mezzanine room), before the propulsive, delightfully scuzzy wares of Liverpudlian quartet Courting transforms the tightly-packed space into a frenzied moshpit-turned-party.
While each venue has felt to be curated specifically this evening, there’s no denying that the anticipation for Oslo’s headliners Gurriers has reached fever pitch by the time they arrive on stage. Fresh from opening up for Kneecap at their huge Wembley Arena show just a week earlier, the Irish outfit waste little time in whipping up a chaotic dark storm in the room’s intimate confines - via cuts from their recently-released debut 'Come And See' - proving just how formidable a live force they’ve come to be.
