The 1975 debut ‘Be My Mistake’ and re-visit site of first London gig at tiny Camden Assembly show
The band’s London comeback was a frenzied, special affair.
Last night (4th December), The 1975 returned to the site of their first London show six years ago at a tiny Camden Assembly gig.
Following their live comeback at Kingston’s Pryzm last week, the show saw the band showcase their recent third album ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ - a record which is set to give the band their third number one album as it stands.
Opening with ‘Give Yourself A Try’ and ‘TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME’, Matty Healy was on predictably swaggering form, pointing out diehard fans by name in the front row, before declaring “I’m gonna call you Barfly, only cos of memories…” before ‘It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)’.
The band played all five singles from the new record before delving into cuts from their debut album and 2016’s ‘i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’.
Making repeated references to their upcoming arena run in January, tonight served purely as the beginning of something massive for the quartet, with the new songs already clearly suited to rooms hundreds of times the size of the cosy Camden boozer.
To close the set, the band give an impromptu look forward to said arena run, playing ‘A Brief Inquiry…’ track ‘Be My Mistake’ live for the first time. After suggesting playing the song even though “the idea makes me feel a bit sick”, Matty Healy ran through an unplugged version of the soft, acoustic new track, insisting the crowd stay deadly silent.
The 1975 head out on a UK arena tour with Pale Waves and No Rome in January. View the dates here, and see the setlist and more pics from last night’s show below.
