She’s got all the fragmented elegance of Karen O or Regina Spektor, with the penetrating shrieks of Kate Bush. That teamed with vulnerability on par with Florence Welch and, quite unfathomably, there is still an overarching uniqueness to singer-songwriter, Marina & The Diamonds.
Hotly tipped for 2010, Welsh-born Marina’s theatrical musical style is the reason for a lot of these comparisons, flitting from piano-rich ballads to experimental pop at its most innovative. First ‘official’ single ‘Mowgli’s Road’ encompasses everything that is quintessentially Marina. It’s eclectic warbling over staccato piano makes for an overdramatic intoxicating debut.
With plans to later do a UK headline tour before letting her sparkly canon loose in the US come October, it looks as if 2010 could be the year that things truly take off for our new favourite leotard-toting keyboardist.
