Martha Wainwright - Bleeding All Over You

Wainwright’s voice is almost like a plaintiff plea, but at the heart of the song is courage, and a desire for emotions to be recognised and valued.

Martha Wainwright

, Rufus’ little sister, is an established artist in her own right and ‘Bleeding All Over You’ is the lead single from her second album. Having recently sold out the Royal Festival Hall she is now embarking on a large scale US tour.

The song starts off with gentle guitars and willowy strings, and is reminiscent of the work of Tanya Donnelly. Wainwright’s voice is almost like a plaintiff plea, but at the heart of the song is courage, and a desire for emotions to be recognised and valued. It is from the perspective of the ‘other woman’ but is never over indulgent or self pitying. One of the most notable lyrics ‘And I know you’re married but I’ve got feelings too’, apart from being wonderfully informed and heartfelt, is also the title for her forthcoming album.

It’s a release that gets even sweeter and more pleasurable on each listen. There is a credibility here which is important but doesn’t stop making this an affecting and personal song whether it may be autobiographical or not. It certainly lacks the pomp and camp of her brothers music but that is no bad things and simply allows Martha a fantastic platform to garner further attention on her own merits. It seems talent runs in the family.
