To be perfectly honest, we can’t say that ‘Soon’ by Mixtapes & Cellmates is a particularly original or ground-breaking piece of music. However we can, with reasonable authority say that it is a rather decent one and a taster for the forthcoming second album from the group, which is due in March.
Usually energetic and epic indie rock with a wintery sheen is something that’s the reserve of the Joy Division aping masses but Mixtapes & Cellmates have taken it in a different direction, utilising glacial piano parts and a British Sea Power-like bass riff to carry the song and employing a string section and wall of shimmering guitars to flesh it out to a fuller sound. The overall effect is of something complete and yet un-smothered.
We’re writing this as the snow lays on the ground and the night is drawing in, and it’s this twilight landscape that ‘Soon’ effectively evokes. No surprise then that the group hail from Sweden and whilst it’s possible to draw comparisons to The Raveonettes, Mixtapes & Cellmates sound is ultimately uplifting and light, as opposed to sexily dark. Good stuff.
