Protomartyr - Why Does It Shake?

For an opening utterance, you won’t find many more graphic and absolute than “False happiness is on the rise, see the victims pile high.” This is Joe Casey of Protomartyr flourishing, divulging notions from his most frank, angry and exasperated state of mind that across two albums has seen the four-piece create some harrowingly visceral sounds. When unified with Casey’s perceptive examinations of life and existence, Protomartyr’s primary reasoning for their own being manifests itself, in finding enlightenment.

It’s a smart approach which is felt throughout ‘Why Does It Shake?’, the initial taste of Protomartyr’s third album ‘The Agent Intellect’. A track that deliberates on each shock of sharp, pitched distortion and fearful synth, the group have an essential understanding of how to be hauntingly cryptic while delivering with stark confrontation at the same time.

To say Protomartyr find themselves at their most intelligent and intuitive at this point would be unjust. While they continue to deliver engaging concepts of this level, their own awareness will simply sharpen as a result.
