Soft Hair - Relaxed Lizard

It aims to shock, with mixed results.

Led by a slightly creepy falsetto croon, burbling atop a bizarrely squelching groove ‘Relaxed Lizard’ is as weird as expected, considering it’s the creation of Sam Dust (of Late of the Pier and LA Priest) and solo oddball Connan Mockasin. Stalking and velvet-clad, Soft Hair channel the surreal funk leanings of the likes of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and turn the saxophone-setting up until the dial snaps.

Like previous single ‘In Love’ (a song which spends much of its chorus going on excessively about Japanese women; perhaps intended as a parodic nod to David Bowie’s equally iffy ‘China Girl,’ but nevertheless, in poor taste) ‘Relaxed Lizard’ is packed with seat-shuffling awkwardness and provocation. Perhaps that’s the intention, here. “I’d like to fuck you but I’m older,” ‘Relaxed Lizard’ simpers in drawn out, theatrical wails. Musically, this is rammed with exactly the kind of fearless creativity you’d expect from Soft Hair. Lyrically, it aims to shock, with mixed results.
