When touring with the mighty Supergrass a few years ago, Canadian gent, Son Of Dave came across as something of a novelty act, looping beat-boxed beats and harmonicas under his vocals. Now, however, he appears to have refined his sound to something that can be digested in larger quantities, and listened to repeatedly rather than getting tiresome after the first 10 minutes.
‘Lover Not A Fighter’ has the sound of a well-crafted R&B song, yet the odd selection of instruments used to accompany the vocals gives it a certainly distinctive style. The double bass throbs and the backing vocals coo. Yet Son Of Dave’s gruff voice accompanying this somehow manages to give this the air of a sexed up Seasick Steve (no, not something we want a visual image of either).
Somewhat hypocritical however is ‘Lover Not A Fighter’, as not only is the track a triumph over adversity (don’t blame him too much for being an inspiration behind KT Tunstall) but he’s also telling us to put our toys away – something he has clearly not done, instead pulling out all the stops, to produce this gem of a pop song.
