This is oddly sunny for a release for this time of year. Being called ‘In The Ocean’ there’s a certain set of expectations for it. Twinkly keyboards? Surf guitar? “Ooooh’s” and “Aaahhhs”? Drums that sound like the sun beating down? Check, check, check and check. Don’t worry, it’s not entirely Beach Boys by numbers, there’s more than a touch of The Shins about this too.
Sorry, we don’t mean to sound as though we’re being harsh on Stars and Sons, there’s just nothing here to surprise us. Sometimes however, we’re content to just sit there and let the music do it’s thing without shocking or challenging us. This is one of those times, the song is really more than pleasant, we just fear that’s it’s come out at the wrong time of year, for there’s no sunny seaside holidays for it to soundtrack. ‘In The Ocean’ is just there to remind us that it’s raining and dark outside.
Never mind, Stars And Sons. It’s obvious that you’ve plenty of talent for creating near perfect seaside summer pop with all the elements that we crave during the t-shirt and shorts months. When the weather improves we’ll dig out this rather nice single and give it some more spins, in the meantime however we’ll wallow in something gloomy.
