The Silents - 23

’23’ is (probably) the amount of times this song will be called derivative and unoriginal.

As well as being the latest single by The Silents, ’23’ is (probably) also the amount of times this song will be called derivative and unoriginal. Not 23 times in this review you understand, although it is tempting to do that. Usually those aforementioned words are used to describe bands in the Joe Lean and the View Courteener Twang vein. Ones who have used that same set of influences of The Libertines, Oasis and The La’s to create some jangle rock that sounds perfect for Radio One.

“I’m old at twenty three” sings the lead singer in a way that tries to exactly mimic Lee Mavers whilst the backing band play a watered down version of something from ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’. Where we can give the song some points however, is in the same way as we can for most things of this ilk- the rhythm section are above passable. That is to say they seem able to play their instruments well and manage to keep something resembling music coming out of the speakers and in time.

This is uninspiring stuff at best, and needless to say I think we can expect them to feature on both the next Live Lounge compilation and them to probably open the next hair gel and magazine sponsored awards tour.
